Miles Eubanks Leads After First Round of Palmetto Amateur

AIKEN – College of Charleston golfer Miles Eubanks is on top of the leaderboard after the first round of the Palmetto Amateur.

The tournament, now in its 50th year, is held at historic Palmetto Golf Club.

Eubanks, who graduated from South Aiken High and grew up playing Palmetto, posted 2-under-par 68 Friday in the tournament’s opening round.

He leads Nick Maccario (69) of Atlanta by one shot. His highlight was an eagle 3 at the par-5 14th.

Five golfers are tied for third at even-par 70: Ben Kendrick of Lexington, Ky., Jordan Sease of Columbia, S.C., Charles Cauthen of Columbia, S.C., Preston Hage of Raleigh, N.C., and Adam Hovermale Jr. of Lakewood Ranch, Fla.

Another five golfers, including former Aiken resident Alex Hamilton, are another shot back at 1-over 71.

Eubanks was 3-over par through six holes before finishing strong. He made birdies at Nos. 9, 10, 12, 14, 15 and 18 to go with bogeys at Nos. 3, 5, 6 and 11.

In 2024, Eubanks tied for third in the Palmetto Amateur with three sub-70 scores. He finished two shots behind winner Chase Nevins.

Changes for this year’s Palmetto Amateur include a move from the traditional summer date to the fall. The tournament has been reduced from 72 to 54 holes, and it is now an invitational with a field of 69 players.

Tee times for Saturday’s second round begin at 8 a.m. The public is invited to attend the tournament at no charge.
