TWO TIED FOR LEAD AFTER SECOND ROUND OF PALMETTO AMATEUR
AIKEN – Scoring conditions were more favorable Saturday in the second round of the Palmetto Amateur, and several golfers took advantage of “moving day” at Palmetto Golf Club.
Charles Cauthen of Columbia, S.C., Nate Gahman of Albany, Ga., and Chandler Mulkey of John’s Island, S.C., made the biggest moves, each firing rounds of 4-under-par 66.
But it’s Cauthen and Miles Eubanks who are on top of the leaderboard through 36 holes. They are at 4-under-par 136, one shot clear of Gahman and Mulkey, with one round to go.
Gareth Steyn (67) of Blacksburg, Va., and John Eades (68) of Charlotte, N.C., are tied for fifth at even-par through two rounds.
Sam Jackson (68), last year’s runner-up and a member at Palmetto, and Adam Hovermale Jr. (71) of Lakewood Ranch, Fla., are another shot back at 1-over for the tournament.
In all, 10 golfers cracked Palmetto’s par of 70 on a perfect fall day.
Eubanks, who graduated from South Aiken High and grew up playing Palmetto, tied for third in the 2024 Palmetto Amateur with three sub-70 scores. He finished two shots behind winner Chase Nevins.
Eubanks is now a junior at College of Charleston, while Cauthen is a freshman at the University of Kentucky.
Changes for this year’s Palmetto Amateur, now in its 50th year, include a move from the traditional summer date to the fall. The tournament has been reduced from 72 to 54 holes, and it is now an invitational with a starting field of 69 players.
Tee times for Sunday’s final round begin at 8 a.m. The public is invited to attend the tournament at no charge.
