NATE GAHMAN HOLDS ON FOR 1-SHOT WIN AT 50th PALMETTO AMATEUR
AIKEN – The 50th edition of the Palmetto Amateur ended Sunday with Nate Gahman of Albany, Ga., hoisting the winner’s trophy.
Gahman, 34, held off local favorite Miles Eubanks by one shot thanks to a clutch birdie on the 17th hole.
Eubanks had a birdie putt on the 18th to force a playoff, but his effort slid by the cup.
Gahman shot 3-under-par 67 at historic Palmetto Golf Club to finish the 54-hole event with a total of 6-under-par 204.
Eubanks, a junior at College of Charleston, shot 69 and was the only golfer in the field to post all three rounds in the 60s.
Charles Cauthen of Columbia, S.C., was tied for the lead with Eubanks through 36 holes, but shot 1-over 71 to finish third.
Sam Jackson (67), last year’s runner-up and a member at Palmetto, was alone in fourth.
Chandler Mulkey of John’s Island, S.C., and Nick Maccario of Atlanta tied for fifth.
Gahman, a two-time Georgia Mid-Amateur champion, was playing in the Palmetto Amateur for the first time. He had another big win earlier this year at the Georgia Open, beating a field that included professionals.
It was the second consecutive close call for Eubanks, who graduated from South Aiken High and grew up playing Palmetto. He tied for third in the 2024 Palmetto Amateur with three sub-70 scores and finished two shots behind winner Chase Nevins.
Changes for this year’s Palmetto Amateur included a move from the traditional summer date to the fall. The tournament was reduced from 72 to 54 holes, and it is now an invitational with a starting field of 69 players.
